In a significant initiative aimed at empowering local artisans, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) (DCH), under the Ministry of Textiles, conducted an Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) in the scenic Bhoothankettu region of Kothamangalam, Ernakulam District, Kerala. The event, organized in collaboration with Life Empower Handicraft Producer Company, was attended by 20 artisans who received invaluable training and guidance on various aspects of entrepreneurship, with the aim of boosting their craft businesses.

Diverse Sessions for Artisan Growth

The programme focused on equipping artisans with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in today’s competitive market. Key sessions covered the following essential topics:

  1. Innovative Design and Development: Artisans were educated on the importance of innovation in the craft design process, emphasizing the need for continuous creativity to meet market trends and consumer demand.
  2. E-commerce and Online Sales: The artisans were introduced to the potential of e-commerce, learning how to effectively sell their products online, which has become increasingly crucial in the digital era. Practical demonstrations on creating online shops and reaching global customers were provided.
  3. Registration and Sales via GEM Portal: Artisans were also guided on how to register their products on the Government e-Marketplace (GEM) portal, enabling them to sell their goods to government agencies, further expanding their market reach.
  4. Logistics & Exporting in International Markets: The programme addressed the possibility of selling products across the globe, packaging design, and logistics.
  5. GST and Tax Benefits: Artisans were trained with the benefits of registering in GST portal, registration particulars, etc.
  6. Financial Planning for Business Launch: A session on setting up a solid financial plan was conducted, with a focus on sustainable budgeting, managing investments, and ensuring long-term business success.
  7. Sustainable Design Practices: Highlighting the growing importance of eco-friendly products, artisans were introduced to sustainable design practices, showcasing how they can incorporate environmental consciousness into their craftmaking.
  8. Exploring International Market Potential: The possibility of expanding sales to international markets was discussed, with strategies to access global customers and tap into international demand for Indian handicrafts.
  9. DCH Schemes and Support: Various schemes and initiatives provided by the DCH were outlined, offering artisans insight into government support systems aimed at promoting their craft and business growth.
  10. Potential for Artisan Growth: The programme concluded with discussions on the future growth potential for artisans, inspiring them to continue developing their craft while scaling their businesses sustainably.

Baby Mangalathu and Shri. Marykutty Baby (Directors, Life Empower Handicrafts Producer Company), Shri. Anandhu Sudheer (Empanelled Designer & Resource Person), Shri. Sam Saju (Resource Person), and Shri. Shino Abraham (Resource Person), among others. The tranquil and sustainable atmosphere of the resort venue further uplifted the spirit of the event, encouraging the artisans to adopt sustainable business practices.
