Mumbai Police has issued notices to producer Ekta Kapoor and her mother, Shobha Kapoor. They were booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly showing inappropriate scenes involving minors in an episode of the web series Gandi Baat on ALT Balaji.
A police officer confirmed that a team visited Kapoor’s office, serving notices that require their presence before the police by October 24 for inquiry. A senior official from ALT Media has also been summoned, and the police have requested specific documents for the investigation.
The case is connected to Season 6 of Gandi Baat on ALT Balaji. Following a court order, a case was filed at Mumbai’s MHB police station against Balaji Telefilms Limited, Ekta Kapoor, and Shobha Kapoor. They face charges under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology (IT) Act, and Sections 13 and 15 of the POCSO Act, among other provisions.
The First Information Report (FIR) was registered on October 18, based on the court’s instructions. The alleged incidents occurred between February and April 2021. The complainant claims that obscene scenes featuring minors were shown in the series. The controversial episode has since been taken down. Additionally, the complaint accuses the series of defamatory content against notable leaders and religious figures. The police are verifying the claims as per the court’s directives.
ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd responded, stating, “In response to various media reports regarding Gandi Baat, ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd confirms full compliance with all applicable laws, including the POCSO Act. Any reference to the involvement of minors is incorrect. Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor are not involved in daily operations, which are handled by separate teams. We trust the judicial process and are cooperating with the authorities. As the matter is sub judice, further comments are reserved.”
