Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has raised a storm over Union Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks on Dr. B R Ambedkar. In a press conference held on Wednesday, Kharge urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action and remove Amit Shah from his position before midnight.
Kharge criticized Shah for his statements during a Rajya Sabha debate, calling them disrespectful to Ambedkar. “We want an apology from Amit Shah. If Modi respects the Constitution, he should remove him by midnight. Otherwise, people who revere Babasaheb will not stay silent,” Kharge asserted.
He further demanded that the Prime Minister act swiftly, stating, “If Modi has any respect for Babasaheb, he should remove Amit Shah immediately. Otherwise, all his talk about Ambedkar is nothing but drama.”
Kharge’s remarks followed a series of statements from Prime Minister Modi, who defended Amit Shah after the Opposition accused him of insulting Ambedkar during his speech in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Modi criticized the Opposition’s claims, labeling them as lies, and listed the Congress party’s alleged misdeeds against Ambedkar.
Amit Shah had stirred controversy with his comments, stating that chanting Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” and highlighting Congress’ historical wrongs towards the leader. Kharge condemned Shah’s words, calling them unfortunate and insulting.
Kharge also accused the ruling government of not respecting the Constitution, saying, “When they talk of heaven and hell, they follow the Manusmriti. They do not believe in the Constitution.” He emphasized that if Modi and Shah truly honored Ambedkar, such remarks should have led to Shah’s removal from the Cabinet.
In his response, Kharge also criticized Modi for defending Shah on social media rather than taking corrective action. He questioned Modi’s commitment to the Constitution, stating, “If someone insults Babasaheb, they should be removed. But they are close friends, and they always support each other’s wrongdoings.”
