India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, recently exited the Oscars race. The decision to select the film sparked criticism on social media, with notable figures like filmmaker Hansal Mehta and musician Ricky Kej questioning the choice. Many argued that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light would have been a stronger contender.
FFI Jury Chair Responds
Jahnu Barua, head of the Film Federation of India (FFI) jury, has addressed the criticism, defending the jury’s decision. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Barua said, “That is very uncalled for. Why should people say such things? It is unfortunate. People should respect the jury’s decision and the democratic process behind it.”
Barua emphasized the importance of accepting the results, even if they do not meet public expectations. He added, “A film’s success or failure in competitions doesn’t diminish the integrity of the selection process. We should be respectful towards the process.”
The Jury’s Rationale
Barua elaborated on why the jury selected Laapataa Ladies:
- They felt that recent Oscar entries from India lacked a strong sense of Indian-ness.
- The film, according to the jury, “brilliantly presented the social chaos we experience in India.”
Regarding Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, Barua stated that the jury found the film “poor technically,” which played a role in its exclusion.
Backlash and Golden Globes Success
Interestingly, All We Imagine As Light has been recognized internationally, securing two Golden Globe 2025 nominations:
- Best Non-English Language Motion Picture
- Best Director – Motion Picture for Payal Kapadia
This recognition has fueled further debate about whether the FFI overlooked a more competitive choice for the Oscars.
Calls for Change
The criticism highlights ongoing discussions about the transparency and methodology of India’s Oscar selection process. Many argue for reforms to ensure stronger contenders represent the nation on global platforms.
