The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Delhi and its surrounding regions due to heavy rainfall on Friday. Thunderstorms and hailstorms are expected to continue until Saturday, impacting parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and East Rajasthan.
Rainfall and Traffic Disruption
Rain began around 2:30 am in the Delhi-NCR region, disrupting traffic across several areas in south, central, and north Delhi. IMD data recorded rainfall at various observatories until 11:30 am:
- Safdarjung: 9.1 mm
- Palam: 8.4 mm
- Lodhi Road: 10.8 mm
- Ridge: 9 mm
- Delhi University: 11 mm
- Pusa: 9.5 mm
Met officials attribute the rainfall to an active western disturbance and its interaction with easterly winds.
Weather Forecast
The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms for the rest of Friday. Saturday is expected to start with shallow fog, followed by light to moderate rain spells in the evening. Temperatures are likely to range between a minimum of 12°C and a maximum of 19°C.
Air Quality Remains a Concern
Despite the rainfall, Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘very poor’ category. At 9 am, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 372, slightly worsening from Thursday’s 24-hour AQI of 345.
