Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Bharatpol portal on January 7, 2025. This platform is designed to streamline international cooperation for Indian law enforcement agencies, aiding in the fight against transnational crimes.
What is Bharatpol and Why Was it Developed?
Bharatpol, created by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), serves as a broadcast hub for assistance and real-time action against global crimes. As India’s National Central Bureau (NCB) for Interpol, the CBI connects Indian law enforcement agencies with their counterparts in 195 countries.
Previously, agencies communicated through letters, emails, or faxes, causing delays in investigations. Bharatpol aims to eliminate these delays and ensure seamless international police collaboration, especially given the rise in crimes like cybercrime, financial fraud, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
Key Features of the Bharatpol Portal
- Unified Platform:
- Integrates the CBI (NCB-New Delhi) with Indian law enforcement, from SPs to CPs, creating a centralized system.
- Simplified Requests:
- Front-line officers can use standard templates to seek assistance from Interpol’s 195 member nations.
- Faster Information Sharing:
- The CBI can share real-time criminal intelligence with Indian agencies.
- Interpol Notices:
- Streamlines the drafting of Red Corner Notices and other alerts, aiding in tracking criminals and their assets globally.
- Capacity Building:
- Offers training resources and templates to help officers conduct effective investigations and seek foreign aid.
Modules of Bharatpol
The portal includes five main modules:
- Connect: Links Indian agencies with Interpol for swift communication and structured requests.
- Interpol Notices: Facilitates requests for color-coded notices, helping track international criminals.
- References: Centralized repository for case documentation and guidance.
- Broadcast: Shares requests and updates from Interpol’s member nations.
- Resources: Provides tools, templates, and training materials for officers.
Amit Shah’s Vision for Modern Law Enforcement
At the launch in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, Amit Shah emphasized the importance of modern technology in tackling global crime. He called Bharatpol a “step towards modernization,” enabling Indian agencies to collaborate effectively with 195 Interpol nations. Shah highlighted that this portal would improve efficiency, speed, and international coordination in criminal investigations.
