An airstrike by Myanmar’s military has resulted in the deaths of dozens in Pazi Gyi village, Rakhine State, according to the United Nations. The attack has left widespread devastation and significant civilian casualties.
“Initial reports indicate that dozens of people, including women and children, have been killed or injured in the airstrike,” stated the UN, as quoted by the Associated Press (AP).
Eyewitnesses described chaos after the bombing. One local resident recalled, “The bombing happened during a gathering in the village. People were celebrating when the airstrike hit, causing many deaths.”
The military’s actions have triggered sharp criticism globally. The UN has called for an immediate halt to violence against civilians. “The use of airstrikes against civilian populations is deeply concerning and must stop immediately,” a UN spokesperson told AP.
Rakhine State has been a hotbed of conflict between the Myanmar military and local ethnic armed groups, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. Many have been displaced by the ongoing clashes.
A human rights activist told AP, “This attack highlights the dire need for accountability and justice for victims of violence in Myanmar.”
The Myanmar military has yet to respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the UN and other international organizations are calling for swift humanitarian assistance to support those affected by the attack.
