Apple is working on an advanced version of Siri, its digital voice assistant, powered by generative AI to offer more sophisticated conversational capabilities. The company is actively looking for talent with expertise in conversational AI to help redefine the assistant’s capabilities. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple’s revamped Siri, internally called ‘LLM Siri’, will be a major part of its broader AI initiative, Apple Intelligence.
Apple’s new Siri will be able to engage in more natural, back-and-forth conversations, thanks to its reliance on large language models (LLMs). The updated assistant will also handle complex tasks, making use of App Intents to interact directly with third-party apps. This new Siri aims to make digital interactions smoother, allowing users to have a richer experience with more personalized, intelligent responses.
The updated Siri is expected to make its debut in 2024, with a preview likely included in iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates. However, the feature will only be fully accessible to all users in 2026. Currently, Apple developers are testing the new Siri on iPhones, iPads, and Macs through a separate app. Eventually, this AI-powered version will replace the current Siri interface on Apple devices.
While Siri has been around for almost 13 years, Apple has primarily introduced cosmetic changes in recent updates. For instance, iOS 18 introduced the ability to type commands to Siri instead of speaking them aloud. This marks a step toward greater flexibility for users. However, the much-anticipated ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence is still in the works and could arrive next month. Apple is also reportedly considering adding other AI chatbots, such as Google’s Gemini, as options for Apple Intelligence users.
With these exciting developments, Apple aims to position Siri at the forefront of the digital assistant race, bringing cutting-edge AI to millions of users worldwide.
