Bibek Debroy, renowned economist and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Friday morning. He was 69.
Debroy was admitted to the AIIMS emergency at around 10 pm on Thursday and passed away at 7 am the next day. Hospital sources reported the cause of death as subacute intestinal obstruction. He had a history of diabetes, hypertension, and a heart blockage, managed by a pacemaker.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Debroy as “a towering scholar” with deep knowledge in fields like economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality. “Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape,” PM Modi wrote on X. He also noted Debroy’s dedication to making India’s ancient texts accessible to younger generations.
PM Modi also shared his personal connection with Debroy: “I have known Dr. Debroy for many years. I will fondly remember his insights and passion for academic discourse. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”
Debroy, a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2015, made significant contributions to Indian literature and scholarship. Among his achievements, he translated the unabridged version of the Mahabharata into English in a remarkable 10-volume series.
