The merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar could reshape India’s OTT landscape, creating a powerful new platform. However, an unexpected development has emerged: a tech-savvy individual from Delhi has secured the domain name “JioHotstar.” This acquisition could complicate plans for a unified platform.
The domain currently directs visitors to a website featuring a letter aimed at Reliance Industries (RIL) executives. The Delhi-based app developer is willing to give up the domain in exchange for funding to support his higher education. Specifically, he aspires to attend Cambridge University and is seeking financial assistance for his Executive MBA.
In a recent update, the developer revealed that he requested £93,345 from Reliance to cover the tuition fees for his Cambridge program. This request was denied by Ambujesh Yadav, AVP of Commercials at Reliance. Yadav suggested the possibility of legal action against the domain owner.
“I don’t have the power to stand against Reliance. I might lose access to this domain in a few hours. If any legal professional could help, I would be grateful,” the developer wrote on the website.
Many users have rallied in support of the Delhi techie, advocating for Reliance to back his education. One user remarked, “This could be great PR for @RIL_Updates, @reliancejio, and @ril_foundation if they sponsor the kid’s education. He is smart and made a clever move. If the Ambanis can spend crores on weddings and donations, this is peanuts. It would be inspiring.”
Another user noted, “This is a really smart move, and I’m sure that £93,345 won’t go to waste.” A third commenter expressed hope that a lawyer would step in to represent him.
