Google and Samsung have unveiled Eclipsa Audio, a revolutionary open-source 3D audio format. Launching with Samsung’s 2025 TVs and soundbars, the format promises an immersive audio experience for users.
A New Era of Audio Innovation
Samsung announced that Eclipsa Audio will be available across its TV lineup, from Crystal UHD models to Neo QLED 8K flagship TVs. The technology allows creators to control sound intensity, spatial reflections, and audio placement, creating a more immersive experience using TV speakers, soundbars, and other devices.
Eclipsa Audio vs. Dolby Atmos
Unlike Dolby Atmos, which requires licensing fees, Eclipsa Audio is free to use. While both offer spatial audio capabilities, Eclipsa’s open-source nature sets it apart, making it accessible for creators and manufacturers.
YouTube Joins the Revolution
Eclipsa Audio will also feature on YouTube, enabling Samsung users to enjoy spatial audio content. A Google Chrome executive hinted that browser support for the format might follow, potentially expanding its reach further.
Adoption Challenges Ahead
Despite its potential, Eclipsa Audio faces hurdles. Most devices currently support Dolby Atmos, giving it a significant market advantage. Additionally, Eclipsa needs broader adoption from streaming platforms and manufacturers. For now, YouTube is the only major platform embracing the format.
Samsung’s Consistent Stand on Proprietary Formats
This move aligns with Samsung’s history of promoting proprietary formats. Similar to how it opted for HDR10 Plus over Dolby Vision HDR, Eclipsa Audio reflects the company’s push for innovation on its terms.
