It was a moment of deep emotion for Gukesh Dommaraju, as he savored his incredible achievement: becoming the youngest-ever chess world champion. At just 18, the young prodigy found himself in the spotlight in Singapore, answering a flurry of media questions. After the celebrations, Gukesh took a moment to reflect on what’s next for him after reaching the pinnacle of the chess world.
Despite the overwhelming achievement, Gukesh remained grounded. He expressed, “My goal is to play at the top level for as long as possible. I’ve just started my journey. I want a long career at the highest level.” He quickly added, “Becoming the world champion doesn’t mean I’m the best player. That’s still Magnus.” Gukesh believes that Magnus Carlsen’s continued dominance serves as motivation to improve and reach new heights. “Knowing there is someone so superior will push me to keep working hard, to try to match Magnus’ greatness,” he shared.
Gukesh’s Future in Chess: Facing the Best
When asked who he would like to face next in a World Championship match, Gukesh didn’t hesitate. “Obviously playing Magnus would be amazing. It would be the toughest challenge in chess,” he said. Though Carlsen had announced in 2022 that he would not defend his World Championship title, Gukesh remains hopeful for a future clash. “It’s up to Magnus, but I’d love to test myself against the best player in the world,” he added.
He also reflected on his strong bond with Indian teammates like Arjun, Pragg, Nihal, and Vidit. The Chess Olympiad victory was a highlight for him, and he looks forward to many more years of fierce competition and collaboration. “We will keep pushing and motivating each other, both individually and as a team. I would love to face one of my teammates in a World Championship match,” Gukesh said.
A Dream Come True
For Gukesh, this journey began when he was just 7 years old. He recalled watching Vishy Anand face Magnus Carlsen in 2013 in Chennai. “I was in the stands, looking inside the glass box, and thought how amazing it would be to play there one day,” he said. As Carlsen triumphed, Gukesh made a promise to himself. “I wanted to bring the title back to India. This dream has been my driving force for over 10 years,” Gukesh added.
Now, as the youngest chess world champion, Gukesh is more determined than ever to make his mark on the game.
