Key Highlights of the Test:

  • Speed and Range: Hypersonic missiles can travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) and cover long ranges. The tested missile is capable of delivering payloads over 1,500 km.
  • Advanced Features: The missile demonstrated precise terminal maneuvers and impact accuracy, confirmed through tracking systems deployed across multiple domains.
  • Indigenous Development: The weapon was developed by DRDO, with contributions from the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad and other laboratories, alongside industry partners.

A Historic Achievement

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the achievement as a “historic moment” for India. “This significant achievement has put our country in the group of select nations with capabilities in critical and advanced military technologies,” Singh said. He congratulated DRDO, the armed forces, and industry collaborators for their success.

Global Context

Hypersonic missiles, capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads, represent cutting-edge military technology. While Russia and China are leaders in this domain, the United States is advancing its hypersonic program. Other nations, including France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Iran, and Israel, are also pursuing hypersonic missile systems.

Some advanced variants of hypersonic missiles can travel at speeds beyond Mach 15, showcasing their potential to revolutionize modern warfare.

Strategic Implications

The successful test enhances India’s deterrence capabilities and strengthens its strategic position in the region. It also reflects the country’s growing self-reliance in defense technology under initiatives like “Make in India.”

This achievement underscores India’s commitment to advancing its defense infrastructure and technological capabilities, ensuring preparedness in an evolving global security landscape.
