Jonita Gandhi Talks Playback Singing, “Noorie” Reinterpretation, and Performing with Dua Lipa

Jonita Gandhi

From “What Jhumka?” to “The Breakup Song,” Jonita Gandhi has firmly established herself in the Indian music industry. Recently, she released her latest recreation of the classic track “Noorie,” originally by Lata Mangeshkar and Nitin Mukesh. In a candid conversation with SCREEN, Jonita opens up about the differences between playback and independent music, her experience with the iconic “Noorie,” and performing with global sensation Dua Lipa.

The Difference Between Playback and Independent Music
Jonita shares her perspective on the distinction between playback singing for films and independent music. “Playback singing often involves interpreting the vision of the director or composer,” she explains. “It’s like being part of a larger story. Independent projects, on the other hand, give me the freedom to express my own ideas and connect with listeners on a personal level.” She admits that both have their own unique appeal, and she enjoys the creative challenge they bring.

Pressure to Create Commercial Music
As an artist who has worked on multiple hit soundtracks, Jonita feels the pressure to create commercially successful music, especially in the film industry. “There’s always pressure to make music that resonates commercially,” she says, “but I believe it’s possible to balance both.” She enjoys projects that allow her to explore her artistic side while still reaching a wide audience. Independent music, in particular, gives her the space to experiment and stay true to her creative vision.

Reinterpreting “Noorie” with Respect and Innovation
Jonita shares the inspiration behind her reinterpretation of the iconic song “Noorie.” “I’ve always admired the magic of ‘Noorie’ since I was young,” she recalls. “When I decided to reinterpret it, I wanted to celebrate its timelessness while giving it a fresh vibe.” She and her team worked closely to keep the soul of the original intact, while adding new verses and a personal touch to make the track unique.

Aware of the nostalgia attached to the original, Jonita was careful to strike a balance. “The nostalgia of ‘Noorie’ is what makes it so special. I was mindful of respecting that sentiment while keeping the essence alive and adding just enough new elements to make it authentic to my style.”

Stepping Into Legendary Shoes
Despite the challenges of reinterpreting such a legendary track, Jonita focused on bringing her own interpretation. “Lata ji and Nitin ji’s voices are iconic, and I knew I couldn’t replicate their magic. Instead, I focused on honoring their legacy while adding my own touch. It was intimidating but fulfilling,” she says.

Performing with Dua Lipa
Jonita’s recent performance at Dua Lipa’s concert in Mumbai was a milestone moment. She had the opportunity to perform “Noorie” live for the first time. “It was such an amazing experience,” Jonita says. “I chose songs that people from India and around the world would enjoy. It was a big moment for me and my team, and I’m so happy it turned out unforgettable.”

Talking about her interaction with Dua Lipa, Jonita adds, “She was incredibly kind and humble. I admired her even more after meeting her. She was so Zen, especially with the big performance ahead of her.”
