OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, recently rolled out a highly anticipated update for ChatGPT users: a chat history search feature. Since its launch in 2022, OpenAI has continuously added useful features to ChatGPT, and this one is no exception. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced the “Memory” feature, allowing ChatGPT to remember details discussed across chats. Now, with the latest update, users can quickly search through past conversations.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI announced that web users can now “search through your chat history quickly and efficiently.” To use this feature, open ChatGPT in a web browser, and click on the search icon (magnifying glass) in the left sidebar. Alternatively, users can press ‘Ctrl+K’ on Windows or ‘cmd+K’ on Mac. This brings up a search bar, where entering keywords or phrases helps find matching conversations.
Currently, the search supports only exact matches, so it’s essential to use precise keywords. Once you find the desired conversation, clicking on it will open the chat, allowing you to read or continue from where you left off.
Archived chats are also searchable, even if they don’t appear in the sidebar, making it easy to retrieve older conversations. However, once a chat is deleted, it is removed entirely from the chat history and won’t appear in search results.
OpenAI has begun rolling out this feature to Plus and Team members, with Enterprise and Edu users expected to receive it within a week. Free users will gain access to the chat history search feature sometime next month.
