Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Constitution is now fully implemented in Jammu and Kashmir. He also marked the occasion as the first time Constitution Day was celebrated in the region.
Speaking at a Supreme Court event celebrating 75 years of the Constitution, Modi praised its adaptability and enduring relevance. “Our Constitution makers envisioned a dynamic document—a living stream, not just a book of laws,” he said.
Social Justice and Progress
Highlighting the Constitution’s foundation in social justice, Modi emphasized its role in ensuring dignity for all citizens. “A developed India is one where everyone has dignity of life,” he said.
Modi contrasted India’s socio-economic conditions after Independence with the transformation over the past decade.
- Housing: Over 4 crore people have received homes.
- LPG Connections: More than 10 crore women now have free LPG connections.
- Tap Water: 12 crore households now have access to tap water.
- Healthcare: Free health care for citizens over 70 years of age.
He also highlighted the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which promises reservation for women, calling it a step towards gender equality.
A Dynamic Constitution
“Our Constitution makers foresaw evolving aspirations and challenges,” Modi said, appreciating how the Constitution adapts to the nation’s changing needs. He added that human values form the cornerstone of India’s legal system and pointed to recent legislative reforms as examples of laws aligned with a modern India.
The event marked a historic milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, aligning the region fully with India’s constitutional framework after decades of unique provisions. Modi’s speech underscored India’s commitment to progress, equality, and justice, rooted in the Constitution’s vision.
