Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ratan Tata, the legendary industrialist and philanthropist, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 86 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after a prolonged illness. Tata, a towering figure in India’s corporate and philanthropic spheres, leaves behind a legacy that transcends business.
In a heartfelt tribute, PM Modi described Tata as a “visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.” The Prime Minister highlighted Tata’s significant contributions, not only to India’s corporate sector but also to society at large. “Shri Ratan Tata Ji provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses,” he said, praising Tata’s humility, kindness, and relentless commitment to societal welfare.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran also paid tribute, remembering Tata as a “friend, mentor, and guide.” He commended Tata’s leadership during transformative years for the Tata Group, which saw the conglomerate expand globally through acquisitions like Tetley Tea, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus.
Ratan Tata, who led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012, is remembered for his visionary approach that propelled the group into the global market. Despite stepping down from his role in 2012, he continued to serve as interim chairman from 2016 to 2017, steering the company through pivotal transitions.
Beyond his business acumen, Tata was celebrated for his philanthropy. His work in education, healthcare, and rural development left a lasting impact on India. He was honored with prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, for his remarkable contributions to the nation.
