In the 115th edition of his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised an important warning regarding “digital arrest” frauds. During his address on Sunday, he highlighted the need for public awareness to protect individuals from these scams, clarifying that no legitimate government agency operates under a system of digital arrests.
“There is no system like digital arrest under law. No government agency will ever contact you via phone or video call for such an investigation,” Modi emphasized, following a representative video that demonstrated the modus operandi of the fraudsters.
He explained how scammers often impersonate officials from various government bodies, including the police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), narcotics agencies, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These imposters engage with victims confidently, using official-sounding titles to manipulate their targets.
Encouraging collective action against cyber scams, Modi urged educational institutions to organize campaigns and promote awareness among students. He outlined three essential steps for individuals to protect themselves:
- Stop and Stay Calm: Do not panic during the interaction. If possible, record the conversation or take a screen recording.
- Verify the Threat: Remember that no government agency will threaten individuals online.
- Take Action: If you suspect a scam, call the national cyber helpline at 1930 and inform local authorities.
In addition to discussing cyber safety, Modi called for a renewed commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative during the festive season. He expressed pride in India’s advancements in technology, stating, “Self-reliance has not only become our policy, it has become our passion.” Reflecting on past skepticism regarding India’s technological capabilities, he noted, “But today, the same people are amazed to see the success of the country.”
Modi also announced the government’s plans to celebrate the 150th birth anniversaries of two significant figures: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and freedom fighter Birsa Munda. He urged citizens to participate in commemorating these leaders. Patel’s anniversary year will commence on October 31, while Munda’s will start on November 15. The prime minister recalled his visit to Ulihatu village in Jharkhand, Munda’s birthplace, during his birth anniversary last year.
Looking forward to World Animation Day on October 28, Modi expressed his vision for India to become a global animation powerhouse. He mentioned the collaboration of Indian animation studios with major production companies like Disney and Warner Bros. Modi highlighted the growing trend of virtual reality tourism and the burgeoning popularity of original Indian content worldwide.
He concluded by calling for a collective effort to make India a leading force in the animation industry, reflecting the nation’s rich culture and creativity.
