Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the inaugural session of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Bhubaneswar, emphasized that the future lies in peace, symbolized by Buddha, not in war (yuddha).
Addressing the Indian diaspora, Modi highlighted Odisha’s historical significance, pointing to Emperor Ashoka’s transformation after the Kalinga War. “When the world was racing to conquer with swords, Emperor Ashoka chose peace at Dhauli, a symbol of peace that continues to inspire India,” he said.
India’s Rising Global Role
Modi underlined India’s growing influence globally, emphasizing its achievements and advocacy for humanity.

- He lauded India’s efforts in supporting the Global South and its push for the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent G20 member.

Honoring Indian Diaspora
Recognizing the Indian diaspora’s rich history and contributions, Modi spoke of preserving their legacy.
- He cited the inspiring stories of Gujarat families migrating to Oman 250 years ago, showcased at the event.
- Modi proposed creating a database of Girmitiyas, indentured laborers who left India during the 19th century, to explore their journey, challenges, and achievements.
- He suggested producing films, documentaries, and research to honor their legacy and hold regular conferences on their contributions.
Commitment to 2047 Vision
Modi praised the diaspora’s role in shaping India’s future and called for collaboration to make India a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of independence.
“This is a shared legacy and heritage. Together, we will build a brighter future,” he said, concluding with a call to celebrate and protect the stories of Indians worldwide.
