At the Snapdragon Summit on Tuesday, Qualcomm introduced its latest mobile chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This is the company’s first smartphone chip to feature the custom Oryon CPU architecture, which debuted in Snapdragon chips for ARM-based Windows laptops.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite will power upcoming smartphones from major brands like ASUS, Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi. One of the first to feature this chip is the OnePlus 13, launching on October 31 in China.
Groundbreaking Performance and AI Capabilities
According to Chris Patrick, senior VP and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Elite offers significant performance improvements and power efficiency. It is built to revolutionize mobile experiences with on-device multi-modal generative AI. The chip can understand speech, context, and images, making it ideal for enhancing productivity and creative tasks while keeping user privacy intact.
Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8 Elite is the fastest mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC) ever, offering:
- Custom CPU cores based on second-gen Oryon CPU architecture.
- A new Adreno GPU with 40% performance improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
- Enhanced Hexagon NPU, enabling on-device AI tasks like text, image, and audio generation.
Impressive Power and Efficiency
With a clock speed of 4.32 GHz, the Snapdragon 8 Elite delivers a 45% performance boost and a 44% improvement in power efficiency. Its AnTuTu score surpasses three million, making it a top performer in smartphone benchmark tests.
The chip also includes the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System for better connectivity and Wi-Fi 7 support via FastConnect 7900.
Enhanced Camera and Video Features
The Snapdragon 8 Elite supports:
- Up to 320 MP cameras.
- 8K video recording at 60fps in HDR.
- Super slow motion videos at 1080p and 480fps.
- Dual-channel memory supporting up to 24 GB LPDDR5x RAM.
- UFS 4.0 storage standard compatibility for faster read/write speeds.
With these features, Qualcomm is positioning the Snapdragon 8 Elite as the ultimate processor for high-performance smartphones, ensuring unparalleled user experiences in gaming, AI, and multimedia.
