Shruti Haasan, daughter of iconic actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, recently opened up about her spiritual journey and the faith that has become a source of strength in her life. Unlike her parents, Shruti discovered her belief in God on her own, without it being instilled in her during her upbringing.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shruti shared that her home was more secular, with her mother being spiritual but her father an atheist. “We never had the concept of God while growing up,” she explained. However, she discovered her faith independently, and it has since played a central role in her life. “I very much believe in the power of God, and that power has taken me through many things in my life,” she said.
What’s particularly interesting is how Shruti’s spirituality diverges from her parents’ progressive views. Despite the lack of religious influence at home, Shruti’s devotion grew from personal experience. When asked how she found God, she responded humorously, saying, “Chori chori” (secretly). She recalled riding her bicycle near a church and temple in her neighborhood, where the bells from both places piqued her curiosity. Eventually, she started visiting the church regularly without her parents knowing, keeping it a secret for months.
One of the most memorable moments in Shruti’s spiritual journey was her first visit to a temple with her grandfather in Chennai. “He told me not to tell my father,” she said, reflecting on the moment with fondness. Shortly after, her grandfather passed away, making that experience even more significant. For Shruti, the temple visit became a symbol of spiritual connection, reminding her of her grandfather’s influence.
Shruti Haasan’s unique and personal journey with faith highlights how spirituality can grow organically, independent of one’s upbringing. Her story is a reminder that faith can be a deeply personal discovery, shaped by individual experiences and connections.
