Smriti Mandhana’s rise from the small town of Sangli, Maharashtra, to becoming a cricketing icon is a testament to her sheer determination and love for batting. Born into a cricket-obsessed family, Mandhana developed a passion for the game, particularly for batting, at an early age. This focus helped shape her into one of the world’s top cricketers, renowned for her elegant left-handed batting style.
Interestingly, Mandhana, a natural right-hander, chose to bat left-handed after watching her brother, a decision that shaped her graceful yet powerful batting. Her journey began seriously around age 10, when she set her sights on representing India. Despite the superior infrastructure in metro cities, Mandhana credits the personalized coaching she received in Sangli for her development, expressing gratitude for the community that supported her dream.
At 28, Mandhana has already played in six World Cups and is India’s top hope for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. Her evolution as a cricketer took a major leap after the 2017 Women’s World Cup, where she focused on developing her power-hitting. Her enhanced ability to clear boundaries, combined with her finesse, makes her a complete batter today.
Off the field, Mandhana faced challenges as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). After initial struggles, she led her team to victory in the 2024 WPL, proving her leadership and resilience.
As India gears up for the T20 World Cup, much rests on Mandhana’s shoulders. Her journey from a small town to global cricketing stardom continues to inspire, with her ultimate goal remaining an ICC World Cup title for India.
