The deadly games are back in Squid Game Season 2, but with a surprising twist. The first trailer, released on Thursday, reveals Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) returning not to win, but to end the horrifying games.
In the trailer, Seong Gi-hun is shown coaching new contestants during a round of Red Light, Green Light, yet, despite his guidance, many meet a tragic fate. Haunted by the deaths of his friends in Season 1, Gi-hun returns with a mission to stop the violence.
This season, contestants are given the option to leave the games if they choose. However, convincing them to quit proves challenging for Gi-hun. Meanwhile, the game organizers closely monitor his every move, suspecting his attempts to spark a rebellion.
Squid Game became a global sensation when it premiered in 2021, capturing audiences worldwide. Its success led to a real-life reality show where contestants faced off in the iconic challenges from the series. Netflix confirmed Season 2 soon after the first season’s overwhelming success.
At a recent event in Italy, creator-director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared insights into the upcoming season with Reuters. “In Season Two, Gi-hun, who survived Season One, returns not to win, but to end the games,” Hwang said. “There will be more characters and even more intriguing games that I hope fans will enjoy. Gi-hun has changed; now, he’s driven by revenge. He wants to find those behind the games and bring them to justice.”
Squid Game Season 2 will be available for streaming on December 26.
