A devastating accident occurred in New Orleans on Wednesday, leaving at least 10 dead and 30 injured. A truck crashed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, according to BBC reports. The driver of the truck then exited the vehicle and opened fire, leading to a shootout with police. The suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire, law enforcement sources told AP.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has labeled the incident as a “terrorist attack.” The FBI is currently investigating the events that unfolded early Wednesday morning.
“Initial reports suggest a car plowed into a crowd. While the full extent of injuries is still unknown, fatalities have been confirmed,” a spokesperson from the New Orleans Police Department told CBS News. Social media videos from the scene show multiple casualties on the ground.
Nola Ready, an emergency preparedness organization in New Orleans, issued an urgent warning on X, saying, “A mass casualty incident has occurred at Canal and Bourbon Street. Evacuate the area immediately.”
The injured were rushed to five local hospitals for treatment. The attack occurred just after New Year’s celebrations and hours before the AllState Bowl college football game, which was set to take place at the Caesars Superdome, with thousands in attendance.
This tragic event is a reminder of the past, as New Orleans has experienced similar incidents. In November 2024, two people were killed, and 10 others injured in two separate shooting and collision incidents during a parade.
