Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s much-anticipated film Vettaiyan continued its struggle at the box office on its first Tuesday, marking a significant drop in collections. The film managed to earn ₹4.25 crore on day six at the domestic box office, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This is a further decline of ₹1 crore from Monday’s collections, highlighting the film’s lukewarm reception.
Vettaiyan has so far accumulated ₹114 crore in India, with a large portion of this coming from Tamil Nadu. The movie’s nationwide appeal took a hit due to its absence in multiplex chains across North India, following a dispute over the theatrical-OTT release window for Tamil films. Despite this, the film was also released in Telugu and Kannada, attempting to widen its reach.
According to official statements from the makers, Vettaiyan has grossed over ₹240 crore worldwide. The production team shared on Instagram that the film is on track to cross ₹250 crore globally, stating, “VETTAIYAN 🕶️ crosses 240+ crores worldwide and still counting! 🤩 Thalaivar’s dominance knows no bounds. 🔥 The hunt continues!”
Despite this, the film still trails behind Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), which grossed ₹455 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. With mixed reviews affecting its performance, Vettaiyan is not expected to come close to GOAT’s record-breaking collections.
Directed by TJ Gnanavel, known for the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim, Vettaiyan is projected to wrap up its theatrical run with a total gross of ₹350 crore. The film is now aiming to surpass Enthiran (Robot), another Rajinikanth blockbuster, which grossed ₹291 crore worldwide in 2010.
Besides Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, the film features Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, and Dushara Vijayan in pivotal roles.
