New York City residents can prepare for and respond to flooding by taking the following steps:
Before a flood:
- Know your flood risk. Check with your local government to see if you live in a flood zone. You can also use the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Flood Map Service to find out your flood risk.
- Develop a flood plan. This plan should include how you will evacuate your home, where you will go, and what you will take with you.
- Purchase flood insurance. Flood insurance is not covered by homeowners insurance. You can purchase flood insurance from FEMA or from a private insurance company.
- Protect your home. Take steps to protect your home from flooding, such as elevating your home, installing flood barriers, and waterproofing your basement.
- Prepare an emergency kit. This kit should include food, water, first-aid supplies, and other essential items that you will need if you have to evacuate your home.
During a flood:
- Monitor the weather and flood warnings. Listen to local news and radio stations for updates on the flood.
- Evacuate your home if necessary. If you are ordered to evacuate, do so immediately.
- Stay away from floodwaters. Floodwaters can be dangerous and can carry debris and contaminants.
- If you must walk through floodwaters, take precautions. Wear a life jacket and use a walking stick to test the depth of the water before walking through it.
After a flood:
- Return home safely. Do not return home until the floodwaters have receded and the authorities have declared it safe to do so.
- Inspect your home for damage. If your home has been damaged by flooding, contact your insurance company to file a claim.
- Clean up your home. Remove any debris and mud from your home and yard. Disinfect any areas that have been contaminated by floodwaters.
- Dry out your home. Open windows and doors to ventilate your home and use fans to dry it out. If necessary, you may need to rent a dehumidifier.
