In a dramatic turn of events, Freiburg managed to snatch a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich, thanks to Lucas Hoeler’s last-minute equalizer. The intense match saw Bayern struggling initially, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer making crucial saves to keep them in contention. However, Freiburg’s persistence paid off with a goal in the 87th minute, ensuring they shared the spoils.
The draw comes as a significant setback for Bayern Munich’s aspirations to clinch the Bundesliga title. Currently, they trail behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen by seven points. Leverkusen, sitting comfortably at the top with 61 points from 24 matches, now has the opportunity to widen the gap further when they face Cologne on Sunday.
Bayern’s performance in their milestone 2,000th Bundesliga game was marred by a shaky start, allowing Freiburg ample opportunities to press forward. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s first-half display, criticizing their lack of discipline and structure. “We played recklessly for the first half-hour,” Tuchel remarked, emphasizing the need for a more determined approach which only materialized after conceding a goal.
Despite Freiburg’s early dominance and a 12th-minute lead courtesy of Christian Guenter, Bayern managed to level the score with Mathys Tel’s stunning long-range effort in the 35th minute. The second half saw a more assertive Bayern, with Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane threatening Freiburg’s goal. Musiala’s brilliance eventually paid off, giving Bayern the lead with a solo effort.
However, Freiburg was not to be denied, and Lucas Hoeler’s late heroics ensured they secured a point, leaving Bayern with just one win in their last four league matches. This result not only dampens Bayern’s title hopes but also highlights the competitive nature of the Bundesliga this season.
