Hockey Star Rani Rampal Faces Baggage Mishap with Air India, Highlights Airline Industry Concerns

Hockey Star Rani Rampal

Indian hockey icon Rani Rampal, a Padma Shri awardee, recently encountered a frustrating situation with Air India upon returning from Canada. After landing in Delhi, she discovered her suitcase severely damaged and took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice her dissatisfaction. Sharing a photo of her broken luggage, she stated, “Thank you, Air India, for this wonderful surprise. This is how your staff treat our bags. On my way back from Canada to India this afternoon after landing in Delhi, I found my bag broken.”

Rampal’s post quickly gained traction, resonating with many travelers who shared similar grievances about airline luggage mishandling. Her public complaint shed light on an all-too-common issue, with users recounting their own experiences. One user shared, “Same thing happened with my luggage at Goa MOPA Airport @IndiGo6E. Broke the handle, had two big holes, and various cracks.” Another echoed Rampal’s frustration, saying, “A few months back, I forgot to collect my expensive headphones from an Air India flight and reported it through email, but received no response till date. Worst.”

Air India responded swiftly to Rampal’s concerns, issuing an apology and requesting more details to address the issue. “Dear Ms. Rampal, we apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please DM us your ticket details, bag tag number, and damage complaint number/DBR copy. We’ll take this up,” the airline wrote.

Despite the airline’s prompt response, Rampal’s experience highlights ongoing concerns about baggage handling and customer service in the airline industry. Her situation mirrors recent complaints from Indian-American Grammy-winning musician Ricky Kej, who criticized Air India for poor service and lack of attention during a flight from Mumbai to San Francisco.

Rampal’s incident, along with Kej’s, has reignited discussions about passenger experiences, emphasizing the need for better luggage handling and more responsive customer service in an industry where these factors are crucial.

Do you believe airlines should be held more accountable for mishandling luggage?
